January 21, 2011 — This question is not just relevant when visiting the Vuyani Safari Lodge, but in general also when going on safari holidays in South Africa, especially when visiting a lodge in the Greater Kruger Park area.
The Moditlo Private Game Reserve, home of the Vuyani Safari Lodge, is located in what is known as the “lowveld”, or “low-lying field” in English. Most of South Africa, such as Johannesburg, is in fact a high plateau, at around 1500m height. The lowveld though, due to its lower altitude, allows for much milder temperatures in the South African winter (May-July).
This means that one can enjoy a safari holiday at the Vuyani safari Lodge all year long!
However, the safari experience varies widely according to the seasons.
The South African summer, lasting from November to February, is the traditional rainy season. Temperatures are then high, air humidity levels are also at their highest. Regular and strong tropical rain showers, often at night, cause nature to wake up again from the long dry season, lasting from late May to October.
Especially the months of September and October are traditionally very dry months of the year. However, for that very reason, they are very popular with safari holidays fanatics. Due to the scarce foliage of the bush the visibility of the wildlife is much better, while the game is in general much more lethargic and offers thus more photo shooting opportunities. That said, migratory birds are not present at that time of year, making it less attractive for birders than a stay during the South African summer months (December-February).
It is hard, therefore, to determine what the best time is to visit for a safari holiday at the Vuyani Safari Lodge. It depends on one’s preferences. In general, there is no “bad” time to visit and the lodge is certainly very busy throughout the year.
Our personal preference is probably for the months of April and May as the vegetation looks very pretty at that time of year, coming out of the rainy season, while temperatures are very comfortable and by far high enough to enjoy relaxed afternoons at the pool. Good weather is also quasi guaranteed. It also allows for fantastic braais in the evenings, without being much harassed by bugs and flies, while wildlife sightings are very decent at that time of year. Locals consider May to be the best month of the year, while hardcore safari experts will invariably pick the months of September and October for perfect wildlife photo shots.
