Turkish companies have prospered in recent years, but intense generic competition and regulatory hurdles have forced many local manufacturers to seek niche products and overseas markets to expand and drive future revenue growth. Although Turkey has a large number of local manufacturers, only a few of them have FDA approved production sites.
In Turkey, the average time a medicine spends in reimbursement review is over 225 days. Additionally, usage of generics is encouraged and so specialized therapeutics that have no generic equivalents seem to suffer.
Turkey adopted patent law in 1999 but this law covers patent applications submitted only since 1995. Drugs registered prior to 1995 are thus not protected. Data protection was introduced in January 2005 and this is valid for 6 years from the initial registration of the drug in the EU Customs Union area, lagging behind more advanced countries.
