DENVER (March 31, 2010) – Four Denver-area women were honored for their dedication and commitment to ending breast cancer at the Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® annual Volunteer Appreciation event held last week at the Denver Athletic Club.

This year’s individual honorees were:

• Alexis Yennie of Littleton was given the Spirit Award

• Kristin Battenfield of Denver was named New Volunteer of the Year

• Sally Cogdill of Erie was named Individual Volunteer of the Year

• Connie Purdy of Denver received the Promise Award

“We simply could not do what we do, reach the people we reach, educate, and raise money, if it weren’t for our incredible volunteers,” said Michele Ostrander, executive director of the Komen Denver Affiliate. “They are an army of passionate, tireless people who believe in our cause and share our mission to end breast cancer in our lifetime.”

The Pinery Country Club and its “Tee it Up for the Cure” event – now in its eleventh year – was also named the 2010 Outstanding Community Partner at the celebratory reception. Since the inception of “Tee it Up,” the Parker, Colo.-based country club has raised more than $138,000 for the Komen Denver Affiliate.

“Just like our volunteers, our Community Partners are vital in helping us reach Colorado women and men – most especially women and men who are medically underserved – and to ensuring that they have access to care, treatment and information. The Tie Up for the Cure event is a tremendous fund raiser; it’s a way to educate people about breast health and it’s fun!” Ostrander added.

With the 2010 Komen Denver Race for the Cure® scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 3 at the Pepsi Center, the Pink Tie Affair™ scheduled for Nov. 6 and numerous education fairs and events, there are many volunteer opportunities available within the Affiliate organization. Those interested in volunteering for the Affiliate can call Amarilis Viera at 303-744-2088, ext. 302, or visit the Affiliate Web site at www.komendenver.org.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and the Komen Denver Affiliate
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. The Komen Denver Metropolitan Affiliate is working to better the lives of those facing breast cancer in the local community, joining more than 1 million breast cancer survivors and activists around the globe as part of the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting breast cancer. Through events like the Komen Denver Race for the Cure®, the Komen Denver Affiliate has invested more than $23 million since 1993 in community breast health programs in 12 Colorado counties (Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, Larimer, Gilpin, Clear Creek, Park and Summit). The remaining 25 percent goes to the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program to fund research. For more information, call 303-744-2088 or visit www.komendenver.org.
