Gail Martin, Founder of DreamSpinner Communications and author of the bestselling Chronicles of the Necromancer dark fantasy adventure series recently spoke on “World Building and Science Fiction” at the Carolinas Writers’ Conference in Wadesboro, NC.

Martin, whose books include The Summoner, The Blood King, Dark Haven and Dark Lady’s Chosen, talked to a room of would-be writers on how to create believable settings for fiction. Whether books are set in the modern world, on another planet or in the distant past, authors must build a framework for their books that feels real to the reader. Martin shared her tips for combining the threads of culture, technology, religion, geography and history to create realistic fictional settings.

The full-day Writers’ Conference was presented in conjunction with Southern Piedmont Community College and included breakout sessions on many aspects of writing and publishing. Noted author Robert Inman presented the keynote speech.
